Interesting Stuff (28Jan12)

Every week (or so), I'll list a few interesting web links, books, and success stories. This is all designed to encourage you to get more involved with changing your life for the better.

Web Links
  • The Truth About Protein and Fat Gain
Some low-carb gurus like to argue that you can eat protein until you are blue in the face and never gain a pound. Why? Because it takes more energy to process protein, giving it a so-called "metabolic advantage." Unfortunately, this metabolic advantage is just wishful thinking. A calorie is a calorie, and if you overeat, then you will gain weight, even if you overeat protein.
  • Mother keeps McDonald's Happy Meal for a whole year... and it still hasn't gone off!
A woman in the UK keeps a happy meal sitting in her house, unrefrigerated, for an entire year and the food doesn't decompose. This can't be healthy. If bacteria and flies want nothing to do with heavily preserved food, then neither should you.
  • The 42-Day Program is Updated!
I added my daily "optimal" micro-nutrient and supplement intakes to my 42-day Rapid PT program. This should help to further accelerate your body and fitness changes during your 42-day preparation for taking the PT test.
  • Are diets high in omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids unhealthy?
Yes! Read this article if you are curious about why they are unhealthy.
  • Coconut Oil and Heart Disease
I love coconut oil! Read about how coconut oil can kill chlamydia pneumoniae (CPN), which has been fingered by the author of The Potbelly Syndrome as one of the infections that can cause heart disease and stroke. Coconut oil kills CPN, which can help prevent CPN (and other bacteria) from causing heart disease.
Books
  • Dangerous Grains
Grains can be dangerous. Wheat especially so. Grains have anti-nutrients and toxins in them that can seriously destroy your health. This book does a very good job of describing exactly why you should AVOID eating grains.
  • Food and Western Disease
If you live in the West (which you probably do if you are reading this blog), then you are very likely sick, even if you don't realize it. That's because the Western diet and lifestyle are hostile towards human health. Even the healthiest humans in the West usually don't compare very well to the incredible health found in human populations still enjoying their tradition diet and lifestyle. So long as these non-industrial populations don't eat our foods, then they have ZERO chance of getting heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, or just about any of the Diseases of Civilization. This book discusses what science has to say about the Paleo, traditional, and Western approaches to diet and lifestyle, as well as the diseases that each is likely to produce.
  • Keep on Running
If you want to understand how to improve your running performance, this is a great book to get.
  • Nutrition and Physical Degeneration
In the 1920s, Dr. Weston A. Price and his wife traveled the world looking for the cause of modern diseases (e.g., heart disease, stroke, diabetes). What he found was a consistent trend: When populations enjoyed their traditional diet and lifestyle, they were healthy and disease-free; when they enjoyed the Western diet and lifestyle, they were prone to disease. This book is a sobering lesson about how industrially-processed foods destroy your health. It is a must-read for EVERYONE!
